PRESERVING NEW ZEALAND'S GMO-FREE ADVANTAGE

We want to preserve New Zealand’s advantage as a nation without GMOs in our agriculture or environment. Remaining GMO-free is better for our economy, health, and reputation. Current regulations, which are on par with other developed agricultural nations, allow for the introduction of gene sequences that meet reasonable tests and registration. We’re not closing the door on genetic engineering but advocating for thoughtful, measured approaches.

Who benefits from GMOs?

While farmers and distributors would earn less for GE agricultural exports, the main beneficiaries seem to be Crown Research Institute gene scientists and speculative gene tech companies. These groups have been misleading Ministers about the illusory benefits of genetically engineered food.

Proven, natural solutions

Simple, low-cost solutions to climate change and pest challenges already exist. These methods work with natural systems rather than forcing expensive, patented modifications. Any changes to New Zealand’s food exports should be market-led, not driven by scientists or speculative industries.

A track record of overpromising

The gene tech industry has been heavy on hype and light on delivery. Over the past 30 years, GE crops have failed to increase yields, reduce costs, or improve food quality. Even commodity GE crops like soy, corn, canola, and sugar beets are not preferred by consumers.

Protecting our future

Farmers and consumers must push back against the Government’s rushed and poorly informed efforts to turn New Zealand into a playground for genetic experimentation. The risks to our economy, reputation, and well-being are too great to ignore.
